On Mansfield Mountain (Etude No. 12)

about

A few weeks ago, I visited New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Because tourism is down right now due to the pandemic, the museum was nearly empty (at least in some rooms), and when I walked into the room that features work by the Hudson River School, I was struck by one painting in particular.

It was Jerome B. Thompson's "The Belated Party on Mansfield Mountain", painted in 1858. You can read all about it at this link: www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/12800

I snapped a quick photo of it, and then just stood there and took it all in.

Once I was back home, I put the image up on my computer screen, and wondered what sounds might be emanating from this painting. What I heard (in my mind) was a reed-like sound, almost like an oboe or a bassoon. I quickly switched on my Moog Grandmother and began working on the design of just such a sound. Once I was happy with it, I plugged into my studio and recorded an improvisation. In one take. No rehearsal.

Then, I added one layer of sound to support this solo improvisation, using a processed electric guitar patch in Omnisphere.

The resulting piece is what you hear today: another entry in my ongoing series of "etudes" meant as studies in analog synthesis. I hope that you enjoy the results.
